Movement for Brain Health; what does that mean? Every movement starts in the brain. First, the brain predicts the outcome of the movement using perception and past memories. Think of, ‘Is that curb too high?’ ‘Did we fall previously?’ ‘Good movement memories or bad movement memories?’

Next, our sensory-motor system takes over. Our sensory nerves control our perceptions. Our motor nerves control our movements. This should be a continuous feedback loop, and it requires a constant stream of sensory information to maintain ongoing control of muscular movements.

In The Classroom, my upcoming Movement for Brain Health video course will be stimulating the brain and employing new movements along with patterns recognition. This course starts in September and runs for the following four months. Non-dominant hand movements will be featured, along with the patterns recognition. We will also examine how the brain can subconsciously restrict our movements (compensation patterns) in order to keep us safe and avoid injury. 

As we age and move less switches start to turn off. Let’s turn them back on.
