Forward posture can be a software problem, hardware problem, or both. A hardware problem could be that the postural muscles are too weak to do their jobs. A software problem would be the inability for the brain to communicate with the postural muscles. See our Posture/Balance videos in “The Classroom” for detailed instruction.
The first thing I always try is walking backwards. I have well over 100 students who have lessened back and knee pain by walking backwards. Some have eliminated it entirely. When we sit we are in hip flexion. When we bring the leg behind the spine, we are in hip extension. Getting into extension can solve a bunch of different problems. If you cannot walk backwards safely, hold onto the kitchen sink and bring the leg behind you in the air (knee does not bend).
Lots of times the inability to get out of a chair is a biomechanics problem. If you are sitting with your back against the chair, your hips are too far behind your heels. Come forward in the chair so that your hips are closer to being over your heels. For some people getting out of a chair may cause knee pain or knee valgus. Trying to solve this can be done with foot placement and internal hip rotation. See our Getting Out of a Chair video.

The best way to explain is to give you an example. Joe came into my shoulder neck program with shoulder pain for four years, I believe. Two weeks later, the pain was gone. Joe's still in my program. Four years later, no pain. As far as Joe and I are concerned, we reversed his shoulder pain age by four years. Here’s a video that goes into more depth.
